Winter hair care is more intense, while I adore the cozy vibes of Tasmania’s wet, refreshing weather, my hair tells a different story. The chill in the air, indoor heating, and gusty winds seem determined to rob my locks of their shine. Can you relate? If your hair feels like it’s having its own winter blues, don’t worry. I’ve learned a few tricks to keep hair looking gorgeous, no matter how cold it gets outside.

Let me take you back to my first winter in Tasmania. Between adjusting to the cold climate and battling dryness from indoor heaters, my hair was a mess, frizzy, brittle, and lifeless. It felt like no amount of products or quick fixes would work. But through trial, error, and a bit of research, I discovered the secrets to winter-proofing my hair. Here’s my guide:

1. Choose Products That Work for You

Not all shampoos are created equal, especially in winter. I switched to a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo and a conditioner packed with shea butter and keratin. The result? Softer, happier hair that doesn’t feel stripped of its natural oils.

2. Bundle Up, the Right Way

I never thought hats could harm my hair until I noticed breakage from the friction of rough materials. Now, I line my winter hats with silk or satin scarves, which not only protect my hair but also look chic.

3. Cut Back on Heat dryer

I used to be obsessed with my dryers but winter forced me to embrace air drying. It turns out, giving my hair a break from heat was just what it needed. Now, I use a microfiber towel to dry it gently, and the difference has been amazing.

4. Stay Hydrated, Inside and Out

It’s easy to forget, but hydration starts from within. Drinking at least eight glasses of water daily works wonders for both your skin and hair. For extra love.

5. Trim the Dead Ends

After ignoring my ends for far too long, I finally gave in and started regular trims every 6-8 weeks. It’s for keeping split ends at bay and my hair looking fresh.

6. Don’t Forget Your Scalp

I learned the hard way that a healthy scalp equals healthy hair. Massaging my scalp with Bioglan coconut oil not only feels incredible but also boosts circulation and moisture.

7. Less is More When Washing

Washing my hair daily used to leave it dry and dull. Now, I wash it every three days and use a dry shampoo on off days. It helps my natural oils work their magic.

8. Feed Your Hair from Within

When I started eating a diet rich in omega-3s, biotin, and vitamin D, my hair felt thicker and shinier. If you’re struggling, consider supplements to fill any nutritional gaps.

9. Dial Down the Shower Heat

Hot showers are tempting in winter, but they’re a big no-no for your hair. I switched to lukewarm water, finishing with a cool rinse to lock in moisture, and my hair couldn’t be happier.

10. Be Gentle When Brushing

I’ve ditched harsh brushes for a wide-tooth comb. It’s perfect for detangling without causing breakage, especially on damp hair.

Following these steps has transformed my winter hair game, and I know they’ll work for you too! Whether your hair is straight, curly, fine, or thick, consistency is key. Trust me, the effort you put in now will pay off with soft, shiny locks all season long. Here are my fave dye sahdes for dreads.
