As we inch closer to the last days of 2024 and prepare for 2025 it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on the past year while setting goals. For me, preparing for a new year isn’t about organizing elaborate vision board parties or attending endless meetings. Instead, it’s a personal journey involving quiet reflection, gratitude, and a deep connection with God. This practice, which started during my university days, remains a cornerstone of my life till now.
I still remember my early attempts at retreating for clarity. Back then, I’d book a room at Redemption Camp or Winners Chapel in Lagos, Nigeria, to completely disconnect and spend uninterrupted time with God. Those moments of solitude were deeply refreshing and helped me refocus. Today, as a wife and mom, I’ve adjusted to this tradition, but it remains an anchor in my life.
While life changes, the need for clarity and direction does not. If you’re a student, parent, or professional, carving out time to reflect and seek guidance is important. If you’re looking to embrace this practice, here are a few tips that work for me, even on the busiest days:
Practical Tips for Reflection Time
- Involve Your Kids: Can’t step away for a full retreat? Let your kids witness your moments of worship. Singing, reading the Bible, or simple prayers can leave a lasting impression.
- Simplify Meals: Prepare meals ahead or opt for easy options to save time and reduce stress.
- Eliminate Distractions: Turn off social media and unnecessary notifications. Using airplane mode can be a lifesaver!
My Step-by-Step Reflection Process
1. Start with Thanksgiving
I always begin with gratitude. Reflecting on Psalms 66, “Count your blessings and name them one by one,” helps me focus on God’s goodness and opens my heart to hear His voice.
2. Reflect and Evaluate Key Areas
I review several aspects of my life to assess growth and alignment:
- Spiritual Life: Am I nurturing my relationship with God? Am I applying His Word in my life?
- Mental Growth: Have I been intentional about learning and self-improvement?
- Health and Well-being: Am I taking care of the body God entrusted to me?
- Purpose and Calling: Am I walking in God’s purpose for my life and serving in alignment with His plan?
- Finances: Am I being wise and intentional with money?
- Relationships: Are my connections enriching and productive?
3. Ask God the Right Questions
After reflecting, I bring specific questions to God:
- Where can I grow or improve?
- How can I better align with Your purpose?
- What steps should I take next?
I spend time in prayer and Scripture, seeking clarity and direction.
4. Seek God’s Help
I ask for mercy, grace, wisdom, financial provision, and divine connections. Listening to faith-based teachings and reading books from trusted mentors often helps me stay grounded.
5. Pray and Prepare for 2025 and beyond.
I dedicate time to praying for the year ahead, rebuking negativity, and seeking divine guidance. I write down any insights or instructions in my journal for reference.
Prepare for 2025 and Adapt.
Even as a busy parent or professional, taking intentional moments for reflection is possible. If it’s a few hours of journaling, reading devotionals, or simply sitting in prayer, small steps can make a big difference.
Preparing for 2025 goes beyond setting goals. It’s about aligning with God’s purpose and stepping confidently into what lies ahead. Every time I engage in this process, I’m reminded of God’s faithfulness and the strength He provides to navigate life’s challenges.
