Guess what connected us? Makeup! Yes, we are both incurable makeup addicts (lol) and constantly share our latest findings with each other.
Recently, I chatted with Kunbi, and she revealed what inspired her to become a makeup artist and how she has found the journey so far. Enjoy her inspiring story below.
The Inspiration Behind Kunbi’s Career
Kunbi’s passion for makeup began at a young age. She was always fascinated by the transformative power of makeup and how it could enhance natural beauty. This fascination grew into a deep-seated passion that eventually led her to pursue a career in the beauty industry.

Kunbi’s journey as a makeup artist has been both challenging and rewarding. She has worked tirelessly to hone her skills and establish her brand, Sit Pretty Inc. Based in Lagos, her business has become synonymous with quality and excellence in makeup artistry.

Kunbi holds a BSc in Chemical & Polymer Engineering from Lagos State University.
Why Makeup Artistry?
Kunbi answers this question with a simple yet profound statement: “Why not makeup artistry?” She believes she has been called to serve others, no matter the profession she chose. Makeup artistry came naturally to her, even though she never anticipated building a career.
Everyone has beauty needs, regardless of their skin type or facial features. Kunbi believes that the desire to appear appreciable lies deep within every human, whether it’s about beauty, fashion, homes, or cars.
What Do You Enjoy?
Kunbi enjoys the challenge each face presents. She loves how a beauty makeover can lift her clients’ spirits and the referrals and love they show her. She also enjoys the networking opportunities the profession offers and, of course, the financial rewards.
When and How Did You Start?
Kunbi’s interest in makeup was sparked in 2003 after reading about Banke Meshida in City People. Coincidentally, Banke was the makeup artist for her cousin’s wedding that same year. Kunbi asked her a few questions and was captivated by how Banke transformed her cousin. This encounter left a lasting impression.
Two years later, a friend asked Kunbi to help transform her sister on her wedding day. Despite her fears, Kunbi took on the challenge. Another friend later requested her services, and Kunbi willingly used her pocket money to buy the needed supplies. In 2006, another cousin requested her services in Ijebu. During this period, Kunbi often visited Kuddy Cosmetics and Alhaja to buy things that interested her.
2007, Kunbi registered her company, and by 2008, shes a professional career in makeup artistry.
The Journey So Far
As expected, Kunbi faced challenges, such as meeting the skill level of celebrated makeup artists and accessing the right products and tools. Thanks to the advent of the internet, many of these challenges have been mitigated. A fantastic support system of family and friends has helped her stay focused and set yearly goals. Prayer, positive confessions of faith, and acting on her faith have been crucial in her journey.
Advice for Aspiring Makeup Artists
Kunbi advises aspiring makeup artists to keep at it, believe in themselves, stay humble, avoid unnecessary drama, make friends with those whose work inspires them, and constantly evolve. She emphasizes the importance of hard work, prayer, and investing in oneself.
