Excellence in the Industry; what industry you might ask? Well, it’s the only industry I am conversant with; it’s the only industry in Nigeria at the moment that is churning out “professionals” rapidly. The makeup industry on Monday the 30th of April 2012 experience what I could describe as the most glamorous , educative , informative seminar that saw the who-is- who in the makeup industry gather together under one roof with the sole aim of looking at ways at improving the standards of the makeup industry.
The seminar is a Nigerian replica of the highly revered IMATS event held all over the world to show case the professionalism in the make up industry. The event was turbo charged and I would have kicked myself hard in the butt if I had missed it.
The event organized by Dainty Affairs Beauty in association with Pink Diamond TL was held at the Pearl Court Hotel, Parkview Ikoyi Lagos was tagged a Seminar for professional Makeup artist with the theme being excellence in the industry.
Tara Fela-Durotoye of the House of Tara kicked off the event with the – Truth behind business: Building a successful Makeup business in Nigeria. Tara highlighted the fact that talent is not enough, stressing that a makeup artist need to harness their skills and be thoroughly diligent at it. Vision she said is foresight and this helps to put proper system and structure in place.
Ifeoma Williams , an image consultant ,talked about Marketing you :How to present yourself as a Makeup artist. She iterated that perception is key in the business, taking an adaption from Professor Albert theory she further went on to say Appearance holds 55%, Presentation is 38% while Content is 7% ,therefore image is everything. A makeup artist must have a key understanding of color.
Sanitation and Organization tips was handled by Tiwa Lawrence a makeup artist from the USA. She further explained the importance of hygiene and space management by using disposables and little containers to scoop products instead of going with the whole products; this was a very practical session.
Menu! Menu!! Menu!!!
After lunch, we had Banke Meshida Lawal of BM Pro speaking about Building Cliental and Bridal Makeup Demo; she analyzed how professionalism is very material to being a successful Makeup artist with emphasis on how to handle clients in a respectful, understanding yet professional manner and also showed a live demonstration with a model on how to achieve that perfect bridal look.
Gabriel Eka , a business consultant with Gaia Limited handled Entrepreneurship Training got service based business. He talked majorly about costing and attracting new clients.
Building your portfolio and working with photographers was handled by Ade Plumtre of Adeplumtre
Photography Business Consultants .Ade talked about building a professional portfolio and advised Make up artists to try as much as possible to make their jobs look as natural as can be avoiding the ever tempting Photoshop and airbrushing. He encouraged makeup to be more creative and branch out of bridal to fashion and editorial makeup.
All in all it was a well packaged event organized by Lolade Ogunjimi of Dainty Affairs Beauty and Tiwa Lawrence, kudos to you and more grease to your elbow.
